It’s a question that's been asked frequently over the years: “Is a college degree worth the investment?” A recent study by Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce answers this question and provides some interesting data to back it up. The study investigates the economic value of 171 college majors and then goes even deeper to provide a breakdown of the highest and lowest-paying degrees by race and sex. Whether you’re about to pick a college major, or you’re just days past graduation and turning that tassel, here’s a look at some of the highest paying degrees for African Americans.


No. 10: Computer Networking and Telecommunications

This area of study involves the design, installation, and improvement of computer networks and software. Degree holders often work as network engineers, computer systems administrators, and web developers. African Americans in this field can expect to earn an average salary of $54,000. The study found that White Americans in this same field earn an average of $56,000.



No. 9: Medical Technologies Technicians

Medical technologists perform clinical laboratory testing that is key to the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. Degree holders often work as cytotechnologists, microbiology technologists, and molecular biology technologists. African Americans in this field can expect to earn an average salary of $55,000, while White Americans in this same field earn an average of $58,000.
