Twenty sixth-graders from the Bronx - winners of a Daily News contest - screamed when they arrived at their hotel Sunday to kick off three days of sunshine and adventure in Florida.

"This is amazing; it's fantastic," said Ashley Colon, 12, as she and her friends checked out the Vespa statues outside the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. "I've stayed at hotels before, yes, but never anything like this."

The all-girls homeroom class from the Urban Institute of Mathematics in Throgs Neck won a trip to Universal Studios and Harry Potter World.

For some of the girls it was their first time in Orlando, and for others it was their first time ever on a plane.

"I'm really excited and glad our class won this trip," said Aneesah Ayub, 12, as the girls gathered earlier at LaGuardia Airport. "It's really good for us to bond together."

Aneesah, traveling with her older cousin, said it would be their first visit in Florida and their first time taking a trip without their entire family. The class spent about a month collecting Daily News front pages and competing against their entire school for the chance to win the trip to Orlando. They won with more than 4,000 front pages collected.

"I did the contest to build morale and bring them together," said Christina Andino-Dieguez, parent coordinator for the last four years who is accompanying her daughter Ashley on this trip. Each child was able to bring one guardian with them. (more)
