STUDY SAYS ENERGY DRINKS BAD FOR KIDS HEARTS


Sports drinks like Gatorade contain too much caffeine to be suitable for children, a report found.

Kids should never guzzle Red Bull or other energy drinks because the caffeine is bad for their heart and nervous system, the American Academy of Pediatrics said Monday. Even popular sports drinks like Gatorade should be reserved for overworked athletes - not children enjoying lunch, the group said in a report released in the online journal Pediatrics.

"For most children engaging in routine physical activity, plain water is best," said Holly Benjamin, a sports medicine expert who co-wrote the report. Energy drinks contain caffeine and other stimulants that have been linked to problems in children's neurological and cardiovascular systems and "should never be consumed" by kids, according to the report.
